What to Expect
As a specialty hospital, the GVS team works directly with your regular veterinarian
for optimal care. That means you will be referred to GVS by your doctor. An appointment
may be made at the time your doctor makes the referral. If not, you will need to
call to schedule the appointment. Along with the appointment time, you will be given
an estimate of the initial examination fees. Because it is not possible to know
the extent or type of the testing and treatment prior to the appointment, a more
accurate estimate will be provided once the specialist has examined the pet. Full
payment is required at the time services are provided. For your convenience, GVS
accepts cash, checks, all major credit cards and CareCredit, a medical finance plan.
On the day of your appointment:
- Please plan to arrive early to complete paperwork
- Park in any space in the parking lot, and enter the lobby through the main doors
for check-in.
- Your doctor will be asked to send your pet’s medical history, including blood test
results, x-rays, medication dosages and any other pertinent information. If you
have a copy, it is helpful if you also bring that information with you.
- Fasting for 10-12 hours may be necessary for some testing. Please inquire about
this prior to your appointment.
- Continue with your pet’s normal medication schedule unless otherwise instructed.
- Should you have to change your appointment, please give us a 24-hour notice. We’ll
be happy to reschedule.
- Once diagnosed and treatment has begun, your family veterinarian and GVS will continue
to work together to further monitor and treat any ongoing problems. Primary care
will be directed back to your family veterinarian.
In case of Emergency please call 404.459.0903 or your veterinarian immediately.
Emergencies
- It is helpful to call us prior to arriving so we can begin to assess your pet’s
condition, help you with directions and address your concerns.
- If you are coming directly from your veterinarian’s office, your doctor will have
already called to let us know you are on your way.
- If you need help bringing in your pet from the car, please let us know. Someone
will be happy to assist you.
- Medical records, current medications or any historical information that you may
have can provide insight into your pet’s condition. If it’s possible, please bring
these items with you.
- Upon arrival, your pet will be assessed by the experienced staff and examined accordingly.
Payment Options
We know that when you have a sick pet, financial arrangements may be not be what
you want to focus on. You want to be certain your pet will the care and attention
needed. We understand.
Georgia Veterinary Services is a unique veterinary hospital, one of only a handful
in the country offering services with specialists, 24 hour critical care monitoring
and hospitalization, as well as emergency services. We are open day and night, every
day of the year, including holidays. Because we offer a level of specialized care
necessary to treat the critical patients and complicated cases referred to us, our
fees for the care given and the procedures performed, while not excessive, may be
higher than a normal veterinary visit.
For most pet owners, the unexpected nature of medical expenses is the most troubling.
The last thing you need is a surprise on your vet bill. That’s why we make sure
that a proposed treatment plan with associated fees is provided to you when your
pet arrives at GVS.
For certain procedures, prolonged stays and extensive emergency visits, we require
a deposit. In addition, when the pet is hospitalized, we will keep you updated on
charges, informing you when the charges start to exceed the initial estimate. We
also encourage you to ask questions so that everyone feels comfortable.
Full payment is required at the time services are provided, when your pet is discharged.
For your convenience, we accept the following forms of payment: cash, checks, Visa,
Mastercard, Discover and American Express. While we do not offer a payment plan
for services we do accept CareCredit --a medical specific credit plan -- and can
process applications in our facility. To obtain pre-approval and credit limit information
prior to arrival through the specific CareCredit plans we accept, visit www.carecredit.com.
Pet insurance may cover some or part of the procedures. You should check with your
individual pet insurance carrier for procedures and policies covering specialty
services. While GVS does not process pet insurance, we can provide you with the
documentation of services rendered so that you may submit a claim to your insurance
carrier.
Communication
We know that you are extremely concerned about your pet’s comfort and well being.
We are too. Our goal is always to provide the best care possible for every single
one of our patients. To do so, we will keep you informed about your pet’s medical
condition in the most efficient way possible.
You can expect:
- A medical update call from your pet’s doctor once a day to keep you informed about
your pet’s condition, planned diagnostic tests and treatment and prognosis. Of course,
if your pet’s condition changes, you will receive an immediate update from one of
the doctors.
- To receive expenses and bill calculations daily.
- To know if and when your pet can be visited.
- Please understand that by law, and to assure the most accurate exchange of information,
our nursing staff can give you basic information, such as your pet’s appetite and
comfort, but only the veterinarians can give you specifics about your pet’s condition.
You can help us by:
- Designating one contact person in your family to discuss the case with us.
- Providing updated contact numbers if they change, and updated contact information
if the designated person changes.
- Understanding that we are attending to a great number of patients with critical
and complex diagnoses. That’s how we’ve earned our reputation for delivering extraordinary
specialty care, and that’s why your veterinarian referred your pet to us. Trust
that our priority is to treat each pet as we would our own, and that our streamlined
communications means that your pet is getting the attention is needs.
Hours of Operation
Because Georgia Veterinary Specialists is both a multi-specialty veterinary referral
hospital and an emergency center, the hours of operation differ for specific services.
GVS is open 24/7 because of our emergency services and ICU, which are staffed around
the clock, seven days a week, every day of the year. An appointment is not necessary
for emergency services. However, to be seen by one of our veterinary specialists,
your pet must first be referred by your veterinarian. Appointments for specialists
are required and are scheduled Monday through Friday, with specific hours varying
by specialty.
Visiting Your Pet
We understand that when your pet is hospitalized this is an emotional and stressful
time for you. Our goal is to make every one of our patients as comfortable as possible
during their hospitalization and at the same time, accommodate your needs as a pet
owner. We encourage you to visit your pet while they are staying with us. However,
we ask for your patience and understanding in following our visitation guidelines,
established to ensure that your pet, and every pet, gets the expert medical attention
they require. We hope the following information will be helpful in assisting you
with your pet's hospitalization and visiting times.
Visiting hours are 7 days a week from 3 pm to 5pm and 7 pm-9 pm.
Though GVS is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, there
may be a waiting period prior to visiting your pet. On holidays, if you choose to
visit on these days, the wait may be longer due to emergency case loads.
We also ask that you limit your visiting time to 15 minutes per visit to allow for
other clients to visit with their pets as well. We know it’s hard to leave them.
Be assured that we will take good care and love them, too.
To refill a medication or food, please complete the form and email to prescriptions@gvsvetcom.
The refill email is checked regularly throughout normal business hours (Monday through
Friday, 8 am to 4 pm) to process all requests as quickly as possible, usually within
24-48 hours (not including weekends or holidays). When your refill is available
for pick up, a member of the GVS staff will notify you with a phone call.
